Cobblers

Finnish cobblers appear in primary sources since the Middle Ages. In rural areas, cobblers existed at least by the 15th century. In towns, cobbling was concentrated in shops, but in the countryside, there were traveling cobblers who went from house to house and from village to village.

Besides the skilled master cobblers, there were always a few less skilled repairers who were content with fixing old shoes. The busiest period for cobblers was the 19th century, when the new elaborate fashion extended to footwear, and homemade shoes no longer satisfied the needs of the wealthier farmers.
